Postcards

Thanks to the marvels of modern design, manufacturing and printing, gone are the days when all promotional postcards looked, felt and were shaped exactly the same. Nowadays, various kinds of executions have lifted the humble postcard to the status of a collectible piece of modern art that is extremely reflective of the times. The wide range of items available to you simply means that you have the luxury to choose just what type of promotional postcard best suits your business, good or service.

Specifications, specifications

Think of specifications as a common language between you and your supplier or distributor. When citing specifications, you have a concrete means of describing just the kind of promotional postcard you want to give out, or for your supplier to describe just the kind of coffee mug he has for you. Although there may seem to be a lot of specs to get straight, they will ultimately make life (ordering, customizing, logistics) easier for both you and your postcard provider.

In a nutshell

Define the concept. Develop ideas about what you want to say about your business, and just how you want it said (using both words and images) on your promotional postcard. Look at other promotional postcards to gauge their effectiveness and learn from –not copy!—them.

Create the design. This is where design, publishing and illustration software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe PageMaker, Adobe InDesign, or Adobe Illustrator come in, as do the expertise of a dedicated art director or graphic designer.

Have your card printed. You can opt to do this in-house, or farm out the work to a printing company. The obvious advantage of the latter is that it can execute more advanced and polished products, but at a cost. It is important to note that sending out digital files to be printed requires that you organize and set up files exactly the way your printing supplies wants them. Otherwise, more time and money will be consumed.
