Promotional Calendars

Since ancient years, promotional calendars have enjoyed a favored spot as a top favorite advertising and marketing tool. Despite the proliferation of thousands of new promotional products in the market today, promotional calendars continue to be indispensable. In fact most businesses would have promotional calendars as standard part of their promotional items inventory. This shows that companies are not discarding promotional calendars in favor of other types of products. On the contrary, they are keeping their orders for promotional calendars on top of other promotional items.

Data from the Promotional Products Association International, in fact, show that promotional calendars were the third largest selling products in the industry in 2004. PPA’s sales by product category for 2004 indicate that promotional calendars cornered 7.46% of the market, next only to wearables (29.9%) and writing instruments (10.6%).

The use of promotional calendars dates back to as early as the 1850s. History tells us that early American promotional products included calendars and almanacs. The Ketterlinus Lithographic Manufacturing Co., based in Philadelphia, began printing calendars that contain advertising in the early 1850s. Known for its color lithography and for being the first to build an iron building in Philadelphia, the Ketterlinus was also credited for its World War I "Liberty Loan" poster and its exports of calendar pictures.

Calendars became even more popular in the following years alongside the developments in printing technology. In 1878, brothers Andrew and Jacob Geiger opened a job printing shop in Newark, New Jersey. The Geigers began printing commercial advertising calendars, fans, posters and cards.

In the 1890s, entrepreneur Jasper Meek – who is credited as the father of promotional products for his pioneering idea of printing burlap school bags with names of advertisers – expanded his product line to include art calendars. Meek even commissioned artists from America as well as from known art centers such as Berlin, Paris and Munich to design his calendars.

Today, promotional calendars continue to be a staple item for advertising and marketing collaterals. Advancements in printing and design technologies have made the business of promotional calendars more exciting. Promotional calendars come in different styles and sizes. Used as appreciation gifts or giveaways for clients and business associates, calendars are perfect promotional materials to put a company’s name, logo, contact numbers, photos, etc.

With calendars, the exposure is literally a year-round. Placed on the walls or desks of customers, businesses can enjoy year-round advertising and increase their chances of being the first in mind when customers should find need for their service. Like other promotional items, promotional calendars also help in spreading goodwill and building up relationships with customers and associates.

Today’s promotional calendars can be easily customized according to company specifications. They can be wall calendars, desk calendars, or pocket calendars. Calendars are very versatile and a company can use it any which way it wants to serve its marketing and promotional efforts. Moreover, promotional calendars also offer one of the best economic values for your promotional investment.

Here are some tips on how you can make the most of your promotional calendars:

Be creative. Highlight your company’s products and services with powerful photos that you can spread throughout the calendar on a month-by-month basis.

Use testimonials from reference clients. Feature how your product or service works for them with pictures and short quotes.

Make it more useful beyond the dates. Calendars can carry useful information other than the dates of the year. Make your customers keep looking back at your calendars for other information such as important phone numbers, legal holidays, tax reminders, etc.

Plan ahead. Obviously, outdated calendars are of not much value. Take ample time for the planning, production and distribution of your promotional calendars.
